Saffron spice is made of dried Crocus sativus L. stigmas.Each saffron flower has a single stigma divided into three filaments which are held together by a small portion of orange-coloured stigma. Once the saffron flowers are collected and the stigmas are removed from the flower, they suffer a dehydration process which reduces their weight to 20%. This process converts the stigmas in saffron spice. This spice is mainly used in cooking as a seasoning and colouring agent and it has been the most expensive spice during decades.
FP6 is the European Community Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration. It is a collection of the actions at EU level to fund and promote research. FP6 budget represents the EU’s third largest financial outlay after the Common Agricultural Policy and the Structural Funds. Collective research project is one kind of actions FP6 promotes and it is carried out by RTD (Research, Technological Development Demonstration) performers on behalf of industrial associations or groupings in sectors where SMEs are prominent. The aim is to expand the knowledge base of large communities of SMEs and thus their general standard of competitiveness.
Saffic project is funded by the European Commission through the Collective Research project. Project partnership is integrated by 7 IAGs, 9 SMEs and 4 RTDs (indicated in the Saffic project section). Saffic was originated from the necessity to control the fraudulent practices proliferating in saffron. The IAGs and SMEs involved in the project aim to develop new methodologies to modify the current ISO norm introducing standards and reliable procedures to fight against the fraud.
In this section you will find current news (press articles, meetings, workshops, etc.) concerning saffron sector and saffic project. -It is just possible to have a look at the European Saffron White Book elaborated by several institutions of Spain, Greece and Italy in www.europeansaffron.eu. The Saffron White Book collects current information about the saffron sector and proposes an strategic plan to solve the actual problems.
